Somehow, they’d avoided drawing any suspicion from Tegan’s dad. He didn’t call often, but when he did, it killed Hudson to lie about the relationship he’d found with his best friend's daughter. Summer was ending, and He knew they’d have to tell him something because he was due home in two weeks.

Hudson finally told Tegan everything that led to getting him kicked out of the Navy. He’d been candid about beating a man to death before he was caught raping a woman in an alleyway. The Judge Advocate dishonorably discharged him versus charging him criminally. They felt his act of heroism got out of control, and killing the man had been an accident. Hudson confided in Tegan that he had killed him because he couldn’t stop hitting him. It was a battle he fought internally every day.

Elijah’s deployments never lasted long, but they thought they had more time before her dad returned home. According to the last conversation, it would take longer for him to process out since he was officially retiring.

"What are you thinking about?" Hudson pressed his lips to the bottom of Tegan’s foot.

They were laid out on a blanket at the beach. Although her house backed up to the ocean, the public beach butted up to their property, which meant they weren’t entirely alone on the sand.

"My dad. He'll be home in a few weeks. Are you worried about what he's going to say?"

"He's going to be mad. No doubt about it."

Deep down, Hudson knew he’d be pissed, but all Tegan cared about was how they handled it. She confided in him she was concerned his loyalty to the Navy and to her father would be the end of them.

"Probably,” Tegan grumbled, her mood souring from the thought.

"Hey." Hudson covered her body with his. He was propped above her, his hands bracing himself in the sand. "I know what you're thinking. You're worried I'm going to walk away from you."

"I—" His lips silenced her rebuttal.

"I'm not going anywhere. I'll admit. When I was discharged from the Navy, I didn’t consider a relationship. But the minute I saw you standing in the kitchen looking like hell on wheels, I knew I was screwed. And the last two months have been the best in my life. So… no. I'm not running. What about you? You may decide it's too hard to stick around."

"Doubtful." She giggled as he ground himself against her bikini bottoms. "What should we tell him first? About us or the fact that I quit school?"

"Shit. Either is going to send him into a rage."

He rolled off her, leaned back on his elbows, and stared absentmindedly into the ocean. Tegan knew this was going to be complicated. He was thirty-six, and she was twenty—almost twenty-one. That alone would be a problem for her father. Add in the fact he was her dad's friend, and she’d quit college… Tegan knew her dad would likely go nuclear.

"We'll get through it, won't we?" Tegan laid back on the sand and stared into the blue sky.
